July 17, 2007 - Safe Kids Austria Wins Pediatric Injury Prevention Counseling Award

Grosse schützen Kleine/ Safe Kids Austria recently received the Children’s Environment and Health Awards in the “Protection from Injuries” category for its Pediatric Injury Prevention Counseling project.

The project was recognized by a jury of international experts from the health and environment sectors for helping reduce harm to children.  The project was initiated to help injured children receive injury prevention counseling.

Safe Kids Austria lobbied for regulations to require doctors to provide counseling on injury prevention to parents. Working with pediatricians, they developed educational materials about childhood injury prevention to be distributed during doctor-patient consultations. As a result of their efforts, a recent survey showed that 70 percent of doctors are regularly handing out materials on injury prevention during consultations with children.

The Safe Kids Austria program has inspired other countries, including Cyprus, the Czech Republic, and the USA, to adopt the same model of Pediatric Injury Prevention Counseling that Safe Kids Austria developed.

The family of Joshua Ward, who ingested harmful dishwashing powders, was very supportive of the Safe Kids New Zealand campaign. They are relieved that no other family will have to go through what they did.
