Prince Michael International Road Safety Award Won by Safe Kids Worldwide and FedEx for The Safe School Zones Grant Program

December 10, 2019

London, England — His Royal Highness of Kent presented Safe Kids Worldwide® and FedEx with his International Road Safety Award for The Safe School Zones grant program. He presented this award at the annual presentation ceremony held Tuesday, Dec. 10, at The Savoy Hotel in London, England.

As part of the Safe Kids Walk This Way® program that is sponsored by FedEx, the Safe School Zones grant program improves pedestrian safety across the United States and in nine other countries by tackling inadequate infrastructure, which is the largest problem in dangerous school zones. Safe Kids Coalitions receive grant funding and access to industry experts to make environmental improvements near schools in their communities. Examples of positive impacts in school zones around the world include an increase in the number of walking students, an increase in motorist yield rates, a reduction in motor vehicle speeds, and fewer crashes between pedestrians and motor vehicles.

“Every day, 44 children are hit by a car in the United States and countless more are injured around the world,” said Torine Creppy, president of Safe Kids Worldwide. “We are proud to work with FedEx to create meaningful changes on local levels that save the lives of children in school zones.”

Safe Kids Worldwide and FedEx have been working together for 20 years to improve pedestrian safety through the Safe Kids Walk This Way program. The program is active in Brazil, Canada, China, India, the Philippines, South Africa, South Korea, Thailand, the United States and Vietnam and has reached more than 18 million children in more than 14,000 schools around the world.

“The Safe School Zones grant program shows how careful observations and targeted improvements can make real differences in communities everywhere,” said Tim Wertner, SVP Operations, FedEx Express. “Over the past 20 years, FedEx team members have had the pleasure of engaging with Safe Kids to improve child pedestrian safety around the world. We are excited to see how this grant program will continue to grow and affect change.”
